The gap between ZipRecruiter's average and Glassdoor's average is close to $38,000. That is not noise. ZipRecruiter's sample leans toward applied AI product roles at smaller and mid-size employers. Glassdoor's sample pulls in more frontier-lab and core-model positions, roles closer to the model itself than to a downstream AI feature, and those roles pay more.

Why do the three sources disagree this much?

Job title inflation is part of it. "AI product manager" gets applied to a role shipping a chatbot feature on top of an existing product and to a role owning model behavior at a company that trains its own models. Those are different jobs wearing the same title, and a salary aggregator can only report what employers labeled, not what the job actually involves.

Company stage does the rest of the work. Wellfound's own AI-startup data shows total compensation swinging from $97,000 to $253,000 depending on funding stage and location, with San Francisco Bay Area averaging $205,000 and Seattle averaging $150,000. A pre-seed startup and a well-funded scale-up will both post "AI product manager," and the number attached to that title will look nothing alike.

Is there a real premium over a general PM role?

Directionally, yes, though no source found this session states a single, dated percentage precise enough to state as fact here. What is consistent across ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, and Wellfound is that AI-labeled product roles sit above general product manager averages at comparable seniority. The premium reflects scarcity: fewer candidates can do the product-strategy work and also evaluate a model's output for bias, hallucination, or an unacceptable failure mode.

That premium is not free money for adding "AI" to a resume. It rewards a specific, checkable skill: catching a bad AI output before a customer does, and having the judgment to decide when a model is not ready to ship.
